The reading in this section that we covered was the issue of "Does media cause individuals to develop negative body images?" Writers, Shari Dworkin and Faye Wach's searched and found articles in magazines that go after men and women, trying to make them but certain products that will help them get and maintain a healthy body. They analyze these articles and find that the writers of these advertisements are telling the public that without these different products you will not be complete and have the perfect healthy body that this model has on the front of the advertisement. These two writers Shari and Faye both agree and argue the yes side with this evidence on how the media causes individuals to develop negative body images. However there also is a no side this is question. The no side believes that the media is not to blame for women's eating disorders but that the girls are to blame. That there lives culturally and socially has caused them to hate there body and do unhealthy things to get skinnier. They also believe that the eating disorders is in their heads, as a behavior issue. These girls view themselves as fat but in reality everyone around them sees that they are actually not fat at all and are in fact really skinny. All in all, in today's world being "fat" scares a lot of people and how our country is proven to be the fattest, more and more people are going above and beyond to become more in shape in healthy ways, and some in not so healthy ways.
I believe that the people in our country should get in better shape, it has been proven that it is possible a lot of people have transformed there bodies. However with that being said i understand that some individuals have certain health problems that do not allow them to lose that weight and that is okay. But people can do whatever they want if they set their minds to it, it is a motivation issue for most people its either you want to get into better shape or you do not. I think that the media as well as celebrities own this country and people want to follow and mock whatever they do and say. So these celebrities and media advertisements help people with what they need to do to become in better shape. Most magazines that i have read have a man celebrity on it that is in great shape, however he does not just sit on the cover looking down on the public because he is in great shape and the people reading it are not. He is helping the people because in that same magazine that celebrity is going over what he eats and how he works out and what he works out to stay fit.
With all of this being said, i believe that media and celebrities team up together to "help" the public get healthier in a good way, and not to make fun of them and make them have negative body images about themselves.
I'm glad you got caught up. Try to post for the remainder of the semester before we discuss the readings in class.
